Deep Dish Dungeon Boat Mechanism Guide

Checked October 14, 2026 · Deep Dish Dungeon, Steam build 25902716

To get the Boat moving in the Deep Dish Dungeon full game, fix the Mechanism beside the Boat with one chain and one iron rod. That is the only repair: the Mechanism at the far end starts fixed. Once both items are in, use either Mechanism, or the Boat itself, to set it moving.

Deep Dish Dungeon boat Mechanism: the quick answer

New to the game? Start at the Deep Dish Dungeon guide hub.

  • Bring: 1 Chains and 1 Iron Rod.
  • Fix: the Mechanism next to the Boat. The game prompt reads "Bring a chain and an iron rod to fix it."
  • Then: use a Mechanism or the Boat to start it. Use it again to stop.

The Water Clock and the Water Gate nearby are separate puzzles. You do not need them for the Boat.

How we know this. No stream we checked showed the Boat moving, so these rules come from how the full game's files and code set up the Boat, its two Mechanisms, the Water Clock and the Water Gate, not from a run we played. Where the Boat takes you is not confirmed yet.

How to fix the boat Mechanism

The Boat has a Mechanism at each end, and the game calls both of them "Mechanism". Only the one beside the Boat needs fixing. The one at the far end starts fixed, and until you repair the one beside the Boat, using it does nothing and its prompt reads "Fix the other end of the mechanism."

To fix the Mechanism beside the Boat:

  1. Bring 1 Chains and 1 Iron Rod in your inventory.
  2. Use the Mechanism. If you carry both, both go in at once. If you carry only one, that one goes in and the Mechanism waits for the other.
  3. Watch the prompt change. With an iron rod in and no chain, it asks you to "Bring a chain to fix it." With a chain in and no iron rod, it asks you to "Bring an iron rod to fix it." When you are carrying the missing item, it tells you to add it.

Both items are used up. You cannot take them back out, so do not bring your last Iron Rod if you still need it for something else.

Players do get stuck here. In a launch-day stream on October 13, 2026, Juniper Actias Official's group reached the Water Clock and read that they needed "to bring a chain and an iron rod to fix the mechanism", then moved on. In Grillmastah's stream on October 14, the group put an iron rod in, were asked for a chain, and had not found one by the end of the session.

You will find the Boat in the sewers. Players reach it in the part with the Water Clock and a Fuse Box.

Where to get Chains and an Iron Rod

Chains are what most players are missing. The full game gives you three ways to get them:

  • A chest in the prison area. One small chest there starts with 3 Chains, so it covers the boat repair with two to spare.
  • Spawn points. Some spawn points in the prison area, the sewers and elsewhere can produce Chains among other items. They are random, so do not count on them.
  • The Workbench. Chains take 2 Iron Rods. The recipe only appears after you have had Chains at least once, so you need to find your first Chains before you can make more.

For the Iron Rod, our items table explains where to find Iron Rods, from rods lying in the level to the Smelter you can build. Keep one for the Boat, and two more for each extra set of Chains you want to make.

How to start and stop the Boat

Once the Mechanism beside the Boat has its chain and iron rod, the Boat works. You can drive it from three places: either Mechanism, or the Boat itself.

  1. Use a Mechanism or the Boat to start it moving.
  2. Use it again to stop it where it is.
  3. Use it again to start it moving the other way. Every new start goes in the opposite direction to the last one.

If you leave it running, the Boat stops by itself when it reaches the end. The Boat's prompt shows "Forwards", "Backwards" or "To stop", and the Mechanisms show "To release chains", "To retrieve chains" or "To stop". If the Boat is not fixed yet, its prompt reads "The lever mechanism needs to be fixed."

The water level makes no difference: the Boat does not check any Handwheel or water in the area, so you do not need to drain or raise anything first.

Where the far end leads, and what is there, is not confirmed yet. We will add it once footage of the Boat crossing is available.

The Water Clock and the Water Gate

The Boat, the Water Clock and the Water Gate are three separate puzzles that happen to sit in the same part of the sewers. In the game's code none of them affects the others, so you can fix and use the Boat without touching either.

The Water Clock cannot be used. It is a timer for a Handwheel next to it: turn that Handwheel and the water it controls changes, then about 30 seconds later the Handwheel turns back on its own. The Water Clock's hand moves with that countdown. Players in Juniper Actias Official's stream called it "a time based puzzle".

The Water Gate does not work at first. Its prompt reads "Bring Handle to fix it." Carry the Water Gate Handle, which lies elsewhere in the sewers, to the Water Gate and it is fixed. After that, using it opens or closes its own gate.

Other Mechanisms you might mix up

The prison Mechanism. The prison area has a different object that the game also calls "Mechanism". It takes one Chains, says "Bring Chains to fix mechanism", and shows a count of how many it has; players read it out as "zero out of one". That one works the Big Door with two Counter Weights, not the Boat. Our items table covers the prison levers and that Mechanism.

The Giant Moray Eel's Handwheels. The four Handwheels around the sewers' boss are a different set and have nothing to do with the Boat; see our Giant Moray Eel guide to the hand wheels.

The Fuse Box. A Fuse Box and loose Fuse Switches sit near the Boat. They open doors in that part of the sewers and are not part of the boat repair.

The Boat in the demo

You could not find the Boat in the free demo, Steam build 23712006. The demo had no Boat, no boat Mechanisms, no Water Clock and no Water Gate, so none of this could be played before the full game.

Version notes and limits

Still open: where the Boat takes you and what is at the far end. We will update this page once footage of the Boat crossing confirms it, or if a patch changes the Mechanisms, the Boat, the Water Clock or the Water Gate.

Deep Dish Dungeon boat Mechanism FAQ

What do you need to fix the boat Mechanism?

One Chains and one Iron Rod. Use the Mechanism beside the Boat while carrying them; you can add them together or one at a time. Both are used up.

Why does the Mechanism say "Fix the other end of the mechanism"?

You are at the far end. That Mechanism starts fixed and waits for the one beside the Boat. Fix the one beside the Boat and both ends work.

Can I get the chain or iron rod back?

No. Once added, they stay in the Mechanism.

Where do I get Chains?

A small chest in the prison area holds 3. Some random spawn points can also drop them. After your first Chains, the Workbench makes more from 2 Iron Rods each.

The Boat is fixed but not moving. What do I do?

Use either Mechanism or the Boat itself. Each use starts or stops it, and every new start goes the opposite way. It also stops by itself at the end.

Do I need to change the water level or use the Water Clock first?

No. The Boat ignores the water level, and the Water Clock and its Handwheel are a separate timed puzzle.

How do you fix the Water Gate?

Carry the Water Gate Handle to it. After that, using the Water Gate opens and closes its gate.

What is the Mechanism that says "0 of 1"?

That is a different Mechanism in the prison area. It takes one Chains and works the Big Door there, not the Boat.

Is the Boat in the demo?

No. The Boat, its Mechanisms, the Water Clock and the Water Gate are full-game only.
