Co-op facts checked October 4, 2026 · Pre-launch status

Deep Dish Dungeon multiplayer is online co-op for up to three players at the same time: you and two friends. You can also play the whole game solo. The Steam and Xbox store pages and Raw Fury's August 27, 2026 press release all say "solo or with up to two friends", and the developer has confirmed the three-player limit several times.

How many players can play Deep Dish Dungeon?

Three at most, at the same time. Deep Dish Dungeon is built for one to three players: you can play the whole dungeon alone or bring up to two friends.

You may still find "up to three friends" on Raw Fury's own game page. That wording is older. Raw Fury's August 27, 2026 press release, the Steam store page and the Xbox Store listing all say "up to two friends", and when a player asked on the Steam board whether it was three or four players, the developer answered: "3 players max at the same time." You can read that reply in the Steam discussion about the player count.

Solo is a full way to play, not a reduced mode. The store pages list single-player alongside online co-op, and the developer has said the game was designed to work for one player and for a group.

How saves and joining work

A save in Deep Dish Dungeon belongs to the game you create, and other players join it. The developer explained in the official Discord in February 2026 that up to three players can be in a save at the same time, but the game does not limit how many different players join and leave that save over time. A larger group can share one world as long as no more than three are in it at once.

The developer has also said that in the full game you can save and load games, so you can keep playing solo or come back to the same world with friends. The Deep Dish Dungeon demo can save and load too since its June 2026 update, but demo saves do not carry over to the full game, the developers said in a Steam announcement on June 12, 2026.

One co-op detail affects how you split up the work: the developer said recipes unlock per player, so each player needs to pick up one of the items in a recipe to unlock it for themselves.

Playing together: public and private games

The demo's menus offer a public game and a private game. A private game can have a password, and the demo's message says it must be at least eight characters: "Password needs 8 characters or more!" Friends can also be invited directly; when an invite is accepted, the demo shows "Invite Accepted... Trying to join game."

Sleeping bags also act as spawn points: when you use one, the demo shows "Sleeping bag saved as a spawn point!"

These menus and messages are from the demo, Steam build 23712006. The full game's multiplayer menus will be checked on launch day.

Is Deep Dish Dungeon crossplay between PC and Xbox?

The stores list crossplay features, but they do not spell out which platforms can play together. The Steam store page lists "Cross-Platform Multiplayer". The Xbox Store lists Xbox cross-platform co-op, Xbox Play Anywhere and cloud saves.

Raw Fury and Behold Studios have not said whether a Steam player can join an Xbox player's game. Until they do, plan on playing with friends on the same store. The platforms the game launches on are listed on the Deep Dish Dungeon release date page.

What to do when you can't join a friend

Start with the message the game shows. The demo has a separate message for each of these join problems:

Demo join messages, quoted from the demo's in-game text, Steam build 23712006.
Message in the gameWhat it tells you
"Lobby has reached its maximum capacity." The game you are joining is full.
"You've been invited to a game version … different from this one, version …" Your game and the host's game are on different versions.
"Cannot find game. Game was closed or recently disconnected." The host's game is no longer running.
"Failed to authenticate. Offline mode." The game could not sign in online and switched to offline mode.
"Online Access set to not allowed in the platform. Please make sure to activate it before continuing in Online mode." Your platform's online access is turned off; the message asks you to turn it on.
"Could not invite friend to join." The invite did not go through.

Demo update v1013, released June 15, 2026, added the option to rejoin a lobby and clearer error messages when finding lobbies, creating a game or joining a game fails, according to the official Steam announcement.

Some players reported in February 2026, on the demo, that joining a friend stalled after the loading bar reached 100%. No official fix has been posted for that report.

Why Deep Dish Dungeon stops at three players

Four-player co-op is a frequent request on the Steam discussion board and in the official Discord, and the developer has answered it more than once. In March 2026 they said the game is "not balanced for 4 players," and in September 2026 they said it is made for at most three players at the same time.

The developer gave the reasons in August 2025: balancing for one to three players is easier than for four, and the game is about scarcity, with less chaos and fewer people in the dungeon. In September 2026 they added that boss fights, puzzle balance, crafting materials and the number of unique items do not work for more than three players at once.

If your group is larger, the shared-save rule above still lets everyone play the same world, three at a time; in September 2026 the developer suggested taking turns.

Version notes and limits

Three items are still open: whether Steam and Xbox players can join each other, whether the full game's multiplayer menus match the demo's, and the cause of the join stalls players reported.

Launch day, October 13, 2026, triggers a check of the full game's multiplayer menus; any change to the player count, crossplay or joining is added with the date it was checked.
