Can you get Leather in the Deep Dish Dungeon demo?
Yes. A small chest in the sewers holds 2 Leather next to a Bone Club, and after that you can craft more from Animal Hide.
To get Leather in Deep Dish Dungeon, you first have to find some. The Leather recipe stays hidden until you pick up a piece, and in our read of the demo's game files the first Leather is waiting in a small chest in the sewers, two pieces next to a Bone Club. Once you have picked it up, the workbench shows the Leather recipe: 2 Animal Hide make 1 Leather. You get an Animal Hide each time you turn a rat into Raw Meat.

| Field | Value |

| Animal Hide | One extra each time you craft a rat into Raw Meat. Evidence: The demo's game files (build 23712006). |

Your first Leather does not come from crafting. In our read of the demo's game files, it is in a Small Chest in the sewers, two pieces of Leather lying next to a Bone Club. If you open a chest down there and find a Bone Club, take the Leather with it.
Getting into the sewers is the same trip as the Hammer hunt: players go up to the second floor of the main camp area and climb down a Rope. Our Prison Key guide describes that descent as part of the demo's key chain, and our guide to the bars and the Hammer covers the flooded part of the sewers in detail.
The developers have said that some treasures in the dungeon are placed at random, so if this chest holds something else in your game, keep checking the chests around the sewers.
This is where most players get stuck: they have Animal Hide, open the workbench, and there is no Leather recipe. The recipe is not missing; it is locked.
A developer explained how recipes unlock in the official Discord on March 7, 2026: "Each player needs to grab one of the items in the recipe to unlock it." For the Leather recipe, the item that unlocks it is Leather itself. That matches the demo's game files, and it matches what players found. On the Steam discussion board, a player who had hides but no recipe got this answer: "If you find some leather first, the recipe will appear in the workbench." You can read the Steam discussion "Leather possibility in demo?".
So the order is:
Animal Hide comes from rats. In the demo's game files, each time you craft a Rat into Raw Meat (a hand recipe in the crafting menu that takes one Rat), you also get one Animal Hide. We found no other source of Animal Hide in the demo: no chest holds it and no other recipe makes it.
Rats are quick, and players on the Steam board say they slip under debris if you are not fast enough. A developer shared the trick in the official Discord on February 28, 2026: put your torch away, crouch, and walk slowly toward the rat.
The crafting menu also has a Rat Trap, made from 3 Sticks. The game describes it as "A passive way of trapping a rat," so you can set one and come back later instead of chasing.
Two rats give you two Animal Hide, which is exactly one Leather, and you keep the Raw Meat as well.
With the recipe unlocked and 2 Animal Hide in your inventory, go to a workbench. The dungeon already has one standing in it, so you do not need to build your own first. Choose Leather and craft it: 2 Animal Hide become 1 Leather, in the demo's game files.
Repeat for every Leather you need. The sewer chest gives you two to start with, so you may not need to craft any for your first project.
Recipes unlock per player. The developer's rule from March 2026 is that each player has to grab one of a recipe's items to unlock it, so the friend who picked up the Leather from the sewer chest has the Leather recipe, and the others may not.
Two easy fixes:
For everything else about playing together, from how many players can join to how saves work, see our Deep Dish Dungeon multiplayer guide.
Recipes that use Leather in the demo's game files include:
| Item | Made from | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Pouch | 2 Leather, 2 Vines | "Adds 3 slots to inventory" |
| Crude Leather Armor | 1 Leather, 3 Animal Hide | Armor |
| Wooden Bow | 2 Wood Plank, 1 Leather | A bow |
Other recipes in the files also call for Leather alongside other materials, so plan which item you want before you spend your first two pieces.
Three items are still open: finer landmarks for the Leather chest in the sewers, exactly how the game checks a recipe's unlock item, and where Leather comes from in the full game.
When the full game launches on October 13, 2026, we will read its game files and update every step that changes.
Yes. A small chest in the sewers holds 2 Leather next to a Bone Club, and after that you can craft more from Animal Hide.
You have not picked up Leather yet. Each player unlocks a recipe by grabbing one of its items, and for Leather that item is Leather itself.
At a workbench, from 2 Animal Hide, once the recipe is unlocked.
From rats. Each time you craft a Rat into Raw Meat in the crafting menu, you also get one Animal Hide.
Two. Each Rat you craft into Raw Meat gives one Animal Hide, and the Leather recipe takes 2 Animal Hide.
At the workbench. In the demo's game files, Leather is a workbench recipe; the hand crafting menu only handles the Rat-to-Raw-Meat step.
Yes. The chest holds 2 Leather, and a Pouch takes 2 Leather and 2 Vines. Crafting more Leather after that is up to your rats.
Put your torch away, crouch and walk slowly toward it, or set a Rat Trap made from 3 Sticks.
Only players who have picked up Leather have the recipe. Let that player craft it, or pass a piece of Leather around.
Recipes that use it include the Pouch, Crude Leather Armor and the Wooden Bow.
