How do you make a hammer in Loftia?
Craft it at your Project Station from 5 Screws and 5 Plastic Discards. The first quest, A Fresh Start, walks you through it.
You make the Loftia hammer from 5 Screws and 5 Plastic Discards at your Project Station, as a step in the first quest, A Fresh Start. Both materials are picked up by hand around Loftia City, so you never need a hammer to make your first one.

The hammer is part of the first quest, A Fresh Start, which Pebble gives you when you arrive. Early in the quest you collect 5 Screws and 5 Plastic Discards for Milo, and those are the same two materials the hammer needs:
Both are picked up by hand, so you can gather them before you own any tools.
Later in A Fresh Start, after you reach your home island, the quest asks you to place a Project Station anywhere on your island, then to craft a Hammer. The game describes the Project Station as the place where "you craft a variety of useful items using materials and Battery charges", so crafting the hammer also uses a little of your battery.
Once you have it, open the Tool Wheel (hold R by default) or press the tools key to equip it, then use it on nearby resources. The game describes the hammer as a tool "used to dislodge reusable materials from big piles of trash".
The full list of A Fresh Start's steps, from Milo's workshop to cleaning up your island, is in our Loftia quest steps.
Loftia City's gathering spots fall into three groups: ones you pick up by hand, ones that need the hammer, and one that needs Hammer Lv.2. Respawn times are the values in the game files, rounded.
| Gathering spot | Tool | Materials | Respawns after |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tall Grass Spot | Hand | Plant Fiber | About 3 min |
| Clay Mound | Hand | Clay | About 3 min |
| Plastic Bottles Salvaging Spot | Hand | Plastic Discards | About 3 min |
| Bucket of Screws Salvaging Spot | Hand | Screws | About 3 min |
| Wire Pile | Hand | Scrap Wire | About 3 min |
| Berry Bush | Hand | Wild Berries | About 3 min |
| Crate Spot | Hand | Plastic Discards, Screws, Tire | About 20 min |
| Wooden Crates Salvaging Spot | Hammer | Scrap Wood | About 5 min |
| Washing Machine Salvaging Spot | Hammer | Metal Scraps | About 5 min |
| Pile of Tires Salvaging Spot | Hammer | Tire | About 5 min |
| Old Microwave | Hammer | Glass Cullets, sometimes Scrap Wire | About 5 min |
| Abandoned Car Salvaging Spot | Hammer Lv.2 | Scrap Wood, Metal Scraps, Glass Cullets, Scrap Wire | About 20 min |
So the hammer is how you get Scrap Wood, Metal Scraps, Tires and Glass Cullets early on. You need them soon after: the next story quest, Permission to Glide, asks for 5 Metal Scraps, 5 Scrap Wood and 5 Tires.
Any gathering, by hand or with the hammer, can also drop Scrambled Coordinates for Ryder's quest; our guide to getting Scrambled Coordinates explains where else they come from.
Using the hammer also trains your Salvaging proficiency, which the game describes as: "Use your Hammer and collect scraps to become more resourceful."
Some objects show a hammer icon with a 2 on them, as players describe it. Those need Hammer Lv.2. In Loftia City, the only gathering spot like that is the abandoned car, which the game files list as "Salvage (Hammer Lvl2)". Players also report objects on their own island that need the upgraded hammer.
You cannot upgrade the hammer in the demo. During the demo, a developer said in the official Loftia Discord on October 20, 2026 that "You won't be able to upgrade your hammer until the full game releases", and in another reply that you upgrade it to level 2 "a bit further into the game".
So if you played the demo, leave the marked objects for now; your progress carries over to Early Access, and the upgrade comes later in the story.
The upgrade recipe. We add the hammer upgrade recipes, and where you unlock them, once Early Access opens on November 3, 2026, after checking them against the Early Access build.
The hammer is not the only tool that grows with you. The developers' official What's in Early Access list names three movement upgrades coming with Early Access: a Propeller upgrade for the Glider, Bounce Shoes and Rail Boots.
Tool upgrades were not part of the demo. We add the upgrade recipes for the hammer and the other tools from the Early Access build after November 3, 2026, rather than publish demo values that may change.
One point is open: the upgrade recipes for the hammer and the other tools, and where you unlock them. Early Access opening on November 3, 2026 triggers an update of the hammer level 2 and tool upgrades sections from the Early Access build.

It means the object needs Hammer Lv.2. In Loftia City, that is the abandoned cars.
Not in the demo. The developers said hammer upgrades come in the full game, a bit further into the story. We add the recipe after Early Access opens on November 3, 2026.
Yes, in Early Access. The developers list a Propeller upgrade for the Glider, plus Bounce Shoes and Rail Boots; we add the upgrade recipes after November 3, 2026.
