The games most like IRON NEST are Radio Commander: Vietnam '64, Tin Can and Steel Fall: Field Artillery Simulator. Radio Commander makes you fight a war from reports alone, Tin Can makes you run an unfamiliar machine from its manual, and Steel Fall is built around fire missions and firing solutions, though it is not released yet.

Quick answer

PVKK is the game most often named next to IRON NEST, and the developers say it inspired them. It is also not out yet: Steam lists it for 2027.

What makes IRON NEST feel like IRON NEST

A list of "similar games" is only useful if it says similar in what way. These are the parts of IRON NEST that the recommendations below are matched against. If you want the full picture before you look elsewhere, our IRON NEST review covers who the game suits.

  • You find the target before you shoot it. Orders arrive as coordinates and reports. You measure the map, work out where the target is and only then commit a shell. Locating targets from spotter bearings is a skill of its own; see how triangulation works.
  • The numbers are yours to work out. Elevation and powder charge come from your own calculation, not an aim assist. Our ballistic calculator shows what that calculation involves.
  • Orders come from High Command. Each operation is driven by written orders, and the Campaign missions are built around reading them correctly.
  • You stay inside the machine. You operate one enormous turret by hand and see the battlefield through maps and reports, not through a free camera.
  • The world is not on your side. IRON NEST is set under an authoritarian regime, told through orders and propaganda newspapers; our lore guide collects them.

IRON NEST is a single-player game on Windows, released on Steam on August 6, 2026.

Recommended games, grouped by what they share with IRON NEST

These comparisons are our judgments, based on each game's Steam store listing and our research on IRON NEST. We have not played every game on this list, and store details were checked on October 3, 2026. Each card says what the game shares with IRON NEST, where it differs and whether you can play it today.

Command by report and firing solutions

Radio Commander: Vietnam '64

  • What it shares: You command soldiers by radio and follow the battle only through their spoken reports. That is the same habit IRON NEST trains: building a picture of the battlefield from what you are told, not what you see. The IRON NEST developer has said the game's core play draws heavily on games like Radio Commander.
  • Where it differs: You lead infantry platoons in a real-time strategy game; there is no gun to load and aim yourself.
  • Platforms and release: Windows, macOS and Linux; released 2019.
  • Status: Out now.

Steel Fall: Field Artillery Simulator

  • What it shares: According to its store page, you receive fire missions, calculate firing solutions, adjust the guns and fire indirectly at targets you cannot see. On paper, that is the closest match to IRON NEST's firing routine of any game here.
  • Where it differs: It puts you in charge of a WWII artillery battery rather than a single giant turret, and the store page is the only description of its play so far.
  • Platforms and release: Windows; listed as Early Access.
  • Status: Not released yet. Steam shows the release date as to be announced.

Learning a complicated machine

Tin Can

  • What it shares: You are stuck in an escape pod whose systems you do not understand, with a technical manual as your main help. If the part of IRON NEST you enjoyed most was learning the procedure and getting it right under pressure, this is the closest fit.
  • Where it differs: It is a survival game in space, not a war game.
  • Platforms and release: Windows, with VR support; released 2022.
  • Status: Out now.

Nauticrawl

  • What it shares: You escape a hostile planet in a stolen machine and have to work out how to pilot it, one lever and device at a time.
  • Where it differs: It is an atmospheric puzzle adventure about figuring the machine out, not a military simulation.
  • Platforms and release: Windows and macOS; released 2019.
  • Status: Out now.

Gunner, HEAT, PC!

  • What it shares: A military simulation that puts authenticity first, for players who liked how seriously IRON NEST treats its weapon.
  • Where it differs: It is about modern armored vehicles in direct combat, so you see your targets and fight on the move; IRON NEST is indirect fire from a fixed position.
  • Platforms and release: Windows; released 2022 and listed as Early Access.
  • Status: Out now in Early Access.

Operating a giant cannon

PVKK: Planetenverteidigungskanonenkommandant

  • What it shares: Its store page puts you in a bunker operating a planetary defense cannon under orders from your superiors. Big gun, fully manual controls, a chain of command: the IRON NEST developers name PVKK as an inspiration.
  • Where it differs: Its gun defends against an invasion from space, while IRON NEST is ground-based artillery. More on the comparison below.
  • Platforms and release: Windows, macOS and Linux.
  • Status: Not released yet. Steam lists it for 2027.

Life under a regime

These two do not play like IRON NEST at all. They are here for players who stayed for the setting: a small person doing a job for a state they may not believe in.

Papers, Please

  • What it shares: You work a border checkpoint for an authoritarian state. The IRON NEST developer has said the game's writing borrows some of its dystopian mood, while the mechanics have nothing in common.
  • Where it differs: It is about inspecting documents, not artillery.
  • Platforms and release: Windows, macOS and Linux; released 2013.
  • Status: Out now.

Beholder

  • What it shares: You are a landlord installed by a totalitarian state and expected to spy on your tenants and report them.
  • Where it differs: It is a management and choices game set in one apartment building, with no combat machine to operate.
  • Platforms and release: Windows, macOS and Linux; released 2016.
  • Status: Out now.

IRON NEST vs PVKK

The two games share a premise: one operator, one enormous gun and fully manual controls. The IRON NEST developers answer this directly in the official Discord FAQ. They say PVKK inspired IRON NEST, and that the difference is what you do with the gun. IRON NEST is built around ground-based artillery, which gives it a different setup, different mechanics and different challenges from PVKK's orbital gun.

In a Steam Community discussion in May 2026, the IRON NEST developer went further. The reply described PVKK as the game that defined this kind of game, and said IRON NEST's day-to-day play owes more to games like Radio Commander, where the work is figuring out where things are from reports, than to PVKK itself.

Can you play PVKK yet? No. As of October 3, 2026, PVKK is not released, and Steam lists it for 2027. If IRON NEST left you wanting more of the same premise, you can wishlist PVKK on Steam; in the meantime, the games in the first group are closer to IRON NEST's firing routine.

Something to play with friends

IRON NEST itself is single-player. What the developers have said about multiplayer, and the community co-op mod, are covered on our IRON NEST multiplayer page.

None of the closest matches above have multiplayer either. If playing together matters more than the procedure, the nearest option on Steam is:

Beach Invasion 1945 – Pacific

  • What it shares: You defend a fortified position against an incoming invasion, alone or in online co-op.
  • Where it differs: It is a WWII first-person shooter and much faster than IRON NEST; you aim and fire directly instead of working out firing solutions.
  • Platforms and release: Windows; released 2023.
  • Status: Out now.
